Debatable ... but also an aside.
You'd choose a road-like position when you're doing road-like riding. It really is that simple. Big tyres don't just work well on terrain that requires sharp changes of direction, but also open, stony tracks (like those pictured). These tracks have long climbs and descents just as you would on a paved road - for which drops are good.
Well I think your particial right but the geo is not going to compensate everything.
