Debatable ... but also an aside.
You'd choose a road-like position when you're doing road-like riding. It really is that simple. Big tyres don't just work well on terrain that requires sharp changes of direction, but also open, stony tracks (like those pictured). These tracks have long climbs and descents just as you would on a paved road - for which drops are good.
Which. if the frame is designed for drop and big tyres, isn't a problem.
It's not like an MTB with a super slack 69 degrees head tube where putting narrow drop bar on will worsen the handling.
