I agree with you. Mistakes are always going to be made. If the driver slows right down and rights the wrong as safely as possible there's no need to take it any further than that. If he has any sense of shame or embarrassment (it sounds like he does) he'll never make the same mistake again.
Basically even though he's made a huge mistake I'd rather be cycling on the road next to him, given his response, than your average driver.
I'm not saying it's OK, or I wouldn't have shown you guys. But there are clearly scales to which you can respond to mistakes. Did they fuck up? Yes. Did I think to myself "fucking wanker"? Yes. Did I think it warranted the same roadsafe report as the dick who nearly flattened me with an unindicated left hook the other night? No.
Does everyone react with full scale "nuke the fucker" embolisms when they see any mistake on the road? I think not, because then you get to the point where you're riding around with a whistle in your mouth looking for issues.
Shit does happen, it shouldn't, but it does. Expecting it to not happen and then going straight to 100% every time it does, will only serve to give you and ulcer. This mistake is pretty fucking low on the scale of "fuckin' hell, you're going to fucking kill someone". Incidents further up the scale should rightly warrant a stronger reaction. Driving over a bike with someone still on it, for example. Or not looking to see if you're about to flatten a 6' 2" 100Kg Irishman with fully charged lights and a bright red jacket - that'll get you a "FUCKING CUNT!" and a report to the federales.
