I guess I see the use of solo and independent as describing different things in this context but as I also don't know much about the legalities over here and it's all hypothetical anyway (and most likely inconsequential as most legal institutions appear to hate cyclists) I think I might just have a nap instead :)

A TT is still a race. Key aspect is "solo". It's the fastest solo rider from point A to point B.
Every unsupported ultra race is an ITT unless it has a pairs/team aspect or you're Lael/Evan. ;0)
No idea how Australia treats TT vs. mass start races legally speaking though.
