• From what I remember and from the cached version of the pages it was described as a "solo unsupported bike race", "solo, single-stage, unsupported, 5,500km road cycling race". It always refers to the race, the only reference I could find alluding to riding apart from the set date was "These notes were created by 2017 racers and can be used by anyone wishing to tour the course at a more relaxed pace."

Reading about independent time trials it always refers to the challenge, route, ride, 'suggested start time', fastest time, completions e.g.:

A route needs no officiator; if you have time-trialled an officially mapped route, or one of your own creation, and ridden within the self-supported rules described here, it can be listed for other challengers to attempt. Some sort of evidence of the ride will be required to recognise its completion to the claimed time. Only routes with a suggested start time or a time already recorded, and openly available gps track data or mapping information, will be listed (This site can host .gpx files for the route). If you have an idea for a potential route, please step up and put down a time.

  • A TT is still a race. Key aspect is "solo". It's the fastest solo rider from point A to point B.

Every unsupported ultra race is an ITT unless it has a pairs/team aspect or you're Lael/Evan. ;0)

No idea how Australia treats TT vs. mass start races legally speaking though.

  • I guess I see the use of solo and independent as describing different things in this context but as I also don't know much about the legalities over here and it's all hypothetical anyway (and most likely inconsequential as most legal institutions appear to hate cyclists) I think I might just have a nap instead :)
