• Is there a way to drive a car to MAKE it burn oil?

Let me explain, my A3 1.8 tfsi is in for stage 1 of it's oil consumption test. I want to make sure I get an accurate result... As in proof that my engine is stuffed and the Pistons and rings need replacement. I currently burn an average of 1.2 litres per 1000 kilometres. This number does vary but I can't pin down if it's highway miles or thrashing the car that is burning the most oil.
Presumably blow-by is the root cause - varied and high rpm or constant rpm, what has the most impact?

  • Give it the Italian tune up. Full power, max RPM, hold it on the governor in second. Basically drive it round like a Royal Mail transit for a bit.
