Chain tension options?

Posted on
  • Hi, I need some advice on what kind of hanger I'll need for my frame. I'll throw up a picture. Going for a single speed freewheel.

It looks like it may be a specific fit given the groove at the back? Appreciate any input here.

  • Unusal dropouts.
    What make of frame ?
    Dropouts look old style.

Not sure if i fully understand your question as you have forward facing semi horizontal dropouts, with a fancy cut out at the the rear for decoration. Are you new to SS conversions and track dropouts.

Anyways, running SS shouldn't be an issue use the long slots, no gear hanger for a tension device needed.

  • Ahhhhh
    your new

    Welcome :)

Full frame pics and and anyother details Brand/model/year will help the hivemind troubleshoot your dilemma.

  • I thought they were unusual too. I haven't a clue on the make of the frame - you don't think the cutouts are there to accommodate some kind of tugnut?

Edit: thanks for the welcome! Here's a full picture of the frame.

  • At first glance that could be a very old frame.

    Chaintugs should not be required.
Any markings on the dropouts...... or Bottom Bracket shell, numbers letters...... seat post diameter...

Just from looking at the pictures i am wondering if you have a modern frame made to look old or an old frame that's been updated to accept modern brakes and had bottle cage mounts fitted.
Hopefully others on here will chime in :)

    Nice looking frame set.

  • The only marking I could find is the number "#72" stamped underneath. I don't think it's very old, but I have no evidence to the contrary.

Thanks for your attention on this. I hear you. Can you explain why I wouldn't have any problems with chain tension? I don't want the wheel to pop forward whilst riding.

  • I assumed you would be using a track nut axled wheelset ( aka bolt on )

http://www.hilarystone.com is worth while for browsing and links to old frames.

If using quick release skewer wheel then a drive side chain tug would be a good idea.

  • if that frame is for 27" wheels you're gonna need run some big ass tyres on 700c otherwise yo pedal gonna strike and yo balls gone drag

  • After a little digging I found that the frame was built by a small Leicester based cycle firm, Cassis Cycles. Going on that, the cutout is likely there for decoration over function. I may be at a disadvantage when installing my wheels which use campag quick release skewers like the ones pictured below.

What chain tug do you think would be best to fit?

@rpm I was lead to believe 700c was the appropriate wheelset size for this frame, I can't see how I'd run in to any immediate problems.
