Could have been sat on a cajon with a kick pedal under his heel. Seen lots of people do that, sounds great.

Yeah it is. Either an electronic pedal or you can get a little wooden box that's got a mic in it. Or it could be something like a single midi key

I've only noticed folkists use them personally.

I saw Willy Mason at the weekend. There was a bass drum sound but no drummer. He seemed to be tapping a pedal. Is that a thing?
