I may be wrong but I believe the higher the number, the tighter the fit
Having had a quick look at the Edwin website, that does seem to be broadly right. However the ED-39 no longer features in their line-up so can't see how it compares.
My ideal would be Nashville with a slight taper below the knee. ED-47 may fit the bill.

I may be wrong but I believe the higher the number, the tighter the fit. The main difference between the 39 and the 55 is the tapering under the knee, whereas the 39 are just straight. The crotch rise also looks a little longer on the 39s.
