Look Keo type cleats - twisted leg?

Posted on
  • Hi all,

I've been riding road bikes with SPD-type pedals and cleats for...ummm...about 20 years. Most recently revived my Speedplay Frog Ti pedals....but equally happy with cheapo Shimano SPDs.

Couple of weeks ago, decided for no genuinely good reason to try out road pedals and three bolt cleats. Guess I was hoping I might get a little more power transfer and foot comfort on a wider platform.

I bought a pair of Ritchey Echelon pedals which came with Ritchey cleats - apparently interchangeable with Look Keo cleats. Set it all up, first ride my left heel feels like it needs to twist outwards more but if I do so, I immediately unclip. Needless to say this leads to discomfort in the knee after half an hour or so. The right foot/leg is absolutely fine.

I've tried to reset the left hand cleats so that they allow the heel to twist out a bit more but to no avail. It feels like there is no float at all in the Ritchey pedal/clip set up.

At the risk of having pretty much already answered my own question.....should I just give up on the road cleat idea and go back to the Frogs?

    Cheers,

    Jon

  • Are you using the red cleat that allows 7 degrees of float?

  • Yes, that looks like the one.

  • I used frogs for a while. Took some time to get used to the free floaty feeling but they were alright. I’m on Speedplay Zeros now after riding Keos for a year or so and enjoying the floaty feeling with slightly more friction than the frogs. A bit expensive but I’ve managed to find two pairs on here for 40 and 50 quid. Would recommend them for relieving knee pain

  • Best thing you could do would be some stretches. Specifically TFL, glutes and adductors

  • Something else to consider is you need your cleat further forward on the left shoe.

  • Thanks for that - it did cross my mind yesterday but I forgot to do anything about it!

  • i had this same issue, recently went to look cleats from time, and it did feel strange, felt like on leg was off centre. I fiddled with the cleat for a while and it seems to have gone away over time. i span the cleat a bit on the sole to move my knee inwards ever so slightly.
