Which Groupset?

If I wasn't getting the shifters/brakes so cheap, I probably wouldn't but it's the hydro brakes drawing me in.

That said I've been riding my CX bike on the road for 6 months with a 11-32 and I've never missed two up front.

    p.p.s. Isn't the 1 gear trend a bit silly?

  • 1 gear is nice chainline, efficient, cheap, smooth, quiet. 1x11 is none of those.

  • Especially when full synchro shift removes the need to worry about which chainring you are in.

  • 99% of people can't afford electronic groupsets

  • They, the 99%, are not on here

  • The 10-11 jump is quite big, only a little bit smaller than 32-36 or 36-40, so a hypothetical 10-32 won't be any less gappy.

In terms of range 11-36 with a 52 chainring exactly matches the gear range of your 11-25 with 52/36. With 10-32 you'd need a 47 chainring (can't go narrow-wide with odd teeth) to match your current range. For comparison a 11-28 Ultegra cassette is 41g lighter than an 11-32. I don't know how much lighter a 47 chainring is than a 52 but assuming it's proportional to the area of the circle a 47 would be about 22g lighter than a 52 (based on a 117g Ultegra 52 chainring).

    So at the very most 47 + 10-32 is going to save ~100g off a 52 + 11-36.

  • DJ what pin/olive I need to bleed R8070 brakes?

  • It’s in the tech doc. I can’t remember off hand.

  • Now have lingering feeling that spending more on 5800 might be the way but let's see.
For general riding, am enjoying 1x but it's going to be racing where it'll come unstuck.

  • Thanks, had no considered some of these combos. Perhaps a 48t with 11-36 is the answer.
Not really fussed about weight, a hydro disc brake roadie may never please a weight weenie.

  • Yeah, 11-36 with 48 would be pretty nice on most flattish roads I think. People worry about spinning out at the top end but you'd be doing over 55 kph on 48/11 at 100 rpm... I for one absolutely do not pedal when I'm hitting those speeds, just tuck up and get ready to grab the brakes

  • Yeah this is why I’m thinking 48:11-40

Basically the same range as 50-34:11-28

  • So based on advice here, and keeping most of my 105 group, I need the following

    Wolftooth 48 tooth chainring
    Wolftooth roadlink
    Sunrace 11-40 cassette
    kmc 114 link chain

  • e*thirteen will have some more affordable options coming (they make the 3t cassettes anyway)

  • It’s the same range, but with lots of gaps in that range. Plus realistically, using the lowest gear can only be an occasional treat as the drivetrain will protest, very noisily.

  • Agreed, but for most situations I only really need middle 7 which is still a spread of 15-28. The mid cassette steps are not that huge so it wouldn’t ruin it I’m my view. The outer 4 are for getting up and Koppenberg etc note the read numbers are crosschain situations

Have you considered 50-34:11-28. I hear its making a come back.

  • Your lowest and highest gears should only be an occasional treat anyway if you ask me. If you're spending a lot of time in either then you're over-geared or under-geared.

Unless you're doing something very specific and weird like Everesting and you want to set your lowest gear precisely at the point that'll get you up the hill and no lower.

  • Tour of Flanders sportive is pretty specific

Last year I rode 50-36:11-28 and dropped the chain at really unfortunate moments. 11-28 was the absolute limit for me on the steepest slopes and it was dry

  • 34-46 x 11-36

  • Compacts and 11-28s didn't exist when I rode that.

Now look at me. Ultras make you weak.

  • is that on trend? Shit, I'll have to throw my new frame out.

  • Yeah. If you're at your limit in your lowest gear and you hit a bit of a headwind you're screwed. I ride around on 50/34 and 11-32. 11-36 for touring. #weakling

  • Lol I’m not a pro rider, so I’m not gonna bullshit that I can ride up a 20% cobbled climb in the big ring. Well done to anyone that can.

Back on topic I’m gonna buy the bits, but I’ll definitely fuck up the install, so I think I’ll get BC to do it for me

Also 48-40 is considerably longer than 34-32 so I’m confused what you are taking about

  • I meant that I'm a weakling, riding around on 34/32 or 34/36, and that generally it's better to have too low a gear than too high a gear.

    Wasn't calling you a weakling!
