  • Who said that?

  • Holding out there as there's no point apart from wheel compatibility, it's a fixed axle type dropout rather than modular so QR makes sense if it's either/or at this price level.

  • I came across an elite for a steal so upgraded. The frame is lovely, Columbus Thron so will be bombproof. It’s the first time i’ve used through axles. The converters and XD driver from Hunt were very straight forward. It came with Schwalbe G-One’s which seemed great on the short blast i took them on. Will be keeping then for some rougher stuff.

  • But you said slower, not handles slower. Skinnier 700c will roll faster

Fair point, was talking about handling.

Bit of a can of worm saying skinner 700c will roll faster, especially when the Compass Bon Jon Pass 35mm tyres is considered to be one of the five fastest tyres in the world, however I don't think they even test out 650b tyres.

  • Just get an Arkose (from me)

  • Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it says Rollwiderstand (W) meaning rolling resistance in Watts. Or to put it in other words, how much power is lost in the tyres. And according to your chart, smaller/thinner tyres are faster since they have less rolling resistance..

BTW I don't think thinner tyres are faster.

I am reading this wrong, these are the top5 fasted rolling. So they tested more than these 5 right?

The theory about wider tyres being faster is that the circumference of the contact patch, where the tyre deforms, creates the rolling resistance. And since a round shape has a smaller circumference than an oval shape, a tyre with a round or rounder contact patch is faster. And wider tyres have a rounder contact patch.

  • Lovely can of worms indeed. That test probably doesn't have enough tyres in it to declare the world's fastest, otherwise there would probably be more tt tyres and such. This test says 28mm gp4000 is faster than the narrower ones and then this says wide Marathons are slower than the narrower. At least without a rider.

  • Great.. I was talking to @Tijs about this. We really need some independent tester that tests all this stuff and gets nice data. Not just tyres.

  • Exactly! None of these rolling resistance tests consider the operational dragforce impact of disc brake rotors (especially 160mm)!!!

  • Yep. Bicyclerollingresistance.com should be independent, as should TOUR, where that chart is from. And I read somewhere that Tom Anhalt, another independent tester, had measured Bon Jon Pass to have a lot bigger resistance than gp4000, but who knows if that's valid.

  • – You should point out that on the smooth surface, the testing being
done at 6 bar actually helped the Bon Jon roll faster than it would at
lower (more typical/appropriate) pressures. For example, I tested the
Bon Jon at 65 psi (~4.5bar) and it rolled signficantly slower than a
Conti GP4K at 7bar (.0058 vs .0035 Crr). In other words, “you can’t
have your cake and eat it too” on the pressure 😉

  • had a chuckle at this from further down

Bicycle Quarterly isn’t the marketing arm of Compass, so our goal isn’t to show the superiority of Compass tires.

  • I can't express just how disinterested I am in anything that Jan Heine has to say. Even when he's right.

  • Expert? Everything Jan Heine has to say is from personal one time experiences. He has never done any actual measurements, just like this quote from before mentioned article "I would love for them to test the Extralight, which we know from our own experience to be even faster."

When you feel something you don't know something.

I do applaud his enthusiasm in creating the best possible products though.

  • anyone removed the head badge from an arkose / pinnacle? they look glued on but be good to find out for sure...

  • Half tried, got bored gave up.

  • Yep repainted my frame. Just stuck on

  • compass extralight tires are fucking shite, used them on an audax ride and got so many punctures everyone disappeared miles ahead and I had to ride the 200k on my own. all that for the low price of £99 per tire or some bullshit

  • and slippery AF in wet .. voyager hyper is where its at or G one tubeless

  • voyager hyper

how do they compare to the marathon supreme super xl hd allmotion superfast 700x35 ones

  • supreme wins hands down because tubeless otherwise at par with compass in weight and rolling but with better grip

  • Tyre thread >>>>>>>>>

  • thanks! I'll get the cotton thread out.
