  • I'm sure you have but just in case - have you considered Worthing? Lots of people seems to be getting priced out of Brighton and heading over here, but the ride into Btn is only the same as many zone 3 into 1 commutes.

We bought here (FTB) in October after realising we were never going to be able to afford to move back to Brighton, and its working out pretty well so far.

  • Yeah - have thought about Worthing and it's on our list. I like the idea for proximity to Brighton but just the amount of space you could get somewhere in Plymouth/similar seems pretty tempting by comparison.

Think we'll airbnb a few trips around places on our list.

  • That's nuts!

I don't think I know where the NAAFI is / was - The old man tried to avoid the forces life where he could, and he always had a very strained relationship with the Navy.

  • The old man left the forces while we were there (at which point the Navy sent him to the Falklands, with a couple of weeks to go before he left the Navy. Meaning he was in the Falklands for 6 months, but having left the Navy...)

We used to play in the old abandoned Ghurka barracks - Discarded condoms seemed to be the order of the day.

There would always be some kid that ended up betting sliced up on broken glass or rusty nails too.

  • holy fuck but doors are expensive. just under 4 large for admittedly a top end, hardwood model including quality locks, frame, installation and a 5 year guarantee.

There doesn't seem to be any middle ground. It's either pay through the nose for the best door money can buy, or pay a third of that for a door made of spiderspunk and cheese a two year old could put a foot through.

    bleh.

  • @greenhell You forgot your hashtag #homeownersexual

  • Have you looked at Howdens?

  • yeah - i could be wrong but all their doors are ready made so no chance of getting a custom size (the front door at the new place is one of those weird dinky 1930's elves doors).

  • The only problem with WhatsApp groups is they just end up full of bantz

Create two, one for the formal stuff, one for bantz, don't subscribe to the bantz one. Works for the various 5-a-side leagues I play in.

  • Big monies, has it been installed yet or is this just a quote?

  • yeah just a quote.

  • Surely not? I mean, I'm just having a quick look and I'm struggling to find owt near that price. In my limited door buying experience I'd have guessed a grand tops for a quality wood door, fitted.

  • mind telling me where you're looking?

yeah i was budgeting for about a 1000 notes. bang goes that plan.

  • Ukoakdoors, oakwooddoors.co.uk, doorsgalore.co.uk ... just random google finds after you posted.

Personally I'm looking at reclaimed on ebay, and getting a joiner to fit.

But I did just see oldenglishdoors.co.uk which looks interesting for a designyourown kinda service. A bit pricey, but closer to 1k than 4k!

  • yup, but they're all presized. which is annoying.

looking at ye olde englishe doors as we speak... possible contender.

  • You know, if you got a plain door and a decent handyperson/builder/carpenter - they could make it fit.

  • Hoping it's not the foffa of the doors world.

  • lol

  • I hope Worthing has changed a bit from when I lived there 11 years ago in Warwick gardens as an impoverished trainee. it was a one horse town and the horse was definitely dead. Might have perked up a bit since.

  • I decided it was a viable option about 2 years ago when Small Batch opened a branch there. The number of vegan menu options about town rises daily. Just don't go north of the railway line.

  • Not moving this week now (even though we advised this was our intention 3 months ago, the sellers need time to 'clear out the property', it's fucking empty, I've been in it) now we are moving 22 Feb, which at least gives me some time to sort this garage out a bit before the move.

Also, the list of shit you fill in that your leaving, what happens if you leave extra or less?
We may have to leave our sofa, but haven't warned them of that, also they said they are leaving an oven, washing machine and tumble dryer, none of which were in the house last time we were there.

  • You are legally required to leave items included on the exchange of contracts inventory or financially compensate for them not being there.

It's sort of the same for leaving things; you can be taken to court for just leaving loads of stuff to be dealt with. If you inform them that you'll be leaving the sofa and they don't want it, i'd strongly recommend getting it scrapped.

    Some good advice here: http://www.fishers-dewes.co.uk/site/blog/conveyancing-blog/what-to-do-if-there-are-fixtures-and-fittings-missing

The key thing is to get it resolved before completion. After completion, it's costly and time-consuming to go about getting money or items back.

  • +1 on what Soul said. Its only fair to let people know what might be left in the property. The shit that got left in a flat I bought a few years back was beyond a joke and it made that "wooo our new home" vibe a lot duller than it should have been.

  • Can anyone recommend a good place for bathroom stuff - sinks, taps, showers, the whole lot. I've used Victoria Plumb in the past, and would rather not have to deal with them again if at all possible.
