Whether something penetrates through your tyre is down to force applied to the casing by the object (or vice versa). If the contact area of your tyre with the flint/glass/nail is constant then a higher tyre pressure will apply a higher force to the tip of the flint/glass/nail and you will get more penetration.
Running your tyres at the right pressure will minimise rolling resistance while minimising puncture risk and detrimental handling. Overpressure will definitely increase puncture risk and may also increase rolling resistance for certain scenarios. -

And conversely too low pressure = pinchy.
-
• #2304
Of course. Not to mention that the tyre will feel like that paddling pool through a corner.
I guess it's easier for someone to identify a tyre underpressure (looks flat, feel crap in corners) than a tyre overpressure (oooo road buzz I must be going so fast!). -

road buzz I must be going so fast
I mean, that's how I do it.

I was entertained cycling home from Green Park watching all these people attempting to ride through central London with clip-in pedals that they could barely use. Every set of traffic lights involved a dozen people slowly moving away one-footed whilst staring down at their feet.

Steward at the bottle of Leith hill repeating overtake on the right, seems fair enough to me.
Me going up Leith hill slowly, several walkers on the left, me , move to the right to go past them. Tosser comes up on my inside, suddenly realises people are walking in front of him. Luckily for me and him he fell to the left onto the verge, I would have been very annoyed if he had fallen to his right into me. Entirely avoidable.
Again on Leith hill, someone presumably quite new to clipless going very slowly, in fact too slow to balance, falls over , bike in the air and still clipped in. !!! -

Hahaha - got to be a dead-pan joke, or maybe he meant to say it was unclassified. I think it goes up to about 8%!

bike in the air and still clipped in. !!!
nice to know dropout is still dropping in.

Very sad news that someone died on the ride:
-
• #2311
haha one guy fell over in front of me on park lane. He hadn't de-clipped throughout his 100mi and only done so at the palace. Basically forgot how to ride his own bike due to being able to actually ride it without interruption

Yes, very sad. It does happen every year - almost guaranteed to uncover an underlying heart problem in someone given how many take part. Wonder if they will bring in requirement for medical signoff, like ASO do with the Etape du Tour.
-
• #2313
Yes, although I would see a 100 as much less strenuous than a marathon. (I think someone dies trying to do the marathon most years.)
-
• #2314
It's about 1 in 45,000 for the London marathon, so roughly one every 2 years.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_marathon_fatalities
"
In 2016, a systematic medical review found that the risk of sudden cardiac death during or immediately after a marathon was between 0.6 and 1.9 deaths per 100,000 participants, varying across the specific studies and the methods used, and not controlling for age or gender.

Ballot open for 2018: https://www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/events/100/entries/

Logging in to https://hub.realbuzzregistrations.com/ I see that I've got a bib number for Ride London 2018.
Not sure if this means I've got a place as I haven't received any other communication to say yes/no (either by post or email).
-
• #2317
I'd imagine not. You dont find out till Feb normally. You can still enter now so they can't have drawn the ballot yet.
-
• #2318
OK, am then wondering if they've given me a place because I did the Swim Serpentine 2 mile swim this year and that (and the London Marathon place I just got in the ballot) and the Ride 100 make up the 3 events in the newly created London Classics: https://www.virginmoneylondonmarathon.com/en-gb/how-to-enter/london-classics/
Only about 1000 people did the 2 mile swim this year (and it was the first year that distance was offered) so they could afford to bump that (relatively) smallish chunk of people up the list in order to help promote the new thing. (Quite a few people had already done R100 and LM so they don't need to bump all 1000 people up the list.)

I have a bib number too, I think it must just be a unique ID before the ballot takes place.
I did the SS 2m this year and got the classics badge, so there's no reason for them to bump me up and in! -
• #2320
I'm confidently guessing the bib number represents just your entry.
I have similar bib number, though it's nearly 53k. And (bib number allocated for entry) is how I'd do it.

• #2321
Btw I never make the ballot. I'm textbook Mamil nodder pace male
-
• #2322
Thanks for the info. I guess we'll find out in Feb then.

I’ve always wondered how many people just rock up on the day...

Sure but I want a London Classics medal: http://www.thelondonclassics.co.uk/
- Ride 100: will get it in the ballot eventually
- London Marathon: Got a ballot place which I will defer to 2019 thanks to a stress fracture
- Did Swim Serpentine 2 mile swim last year
- Ride 100: will get it in the ballot eventually
How does high pressure = flat?
