You need decent wire strippers. I used £5 ebay ones:
(Yellow Pro Adjustable Automatic Wire Cable Cutter Stripper Crimper Plier DCUK)Get some heat shrink (it may be included).
Remember to slide a length of heatshrink onto the cable BEFORE you twist them together!
Other than those two tips I can't think of anything else, except maybe, measure twice, cut once.
