I'm pretty much set on cable disks. They're much better in the wet or with a load of gear on the bike and I can get a set of 650b wheels if I want to. (Compressionless outers obviously.) And I'm likely to upgrade to hydraulic in future; would only need to buy levers, 11-speed cassette and brake calipers.
The newer ones do clear 40mm tyres apparently.
If price is the main concern, I'd rather ride a decent cantilever/mini-v frame, than a pretty shit disc brake bike.
Heavy, dull ride. Mine felt similar to On-One Inbreds that I've had and quickly got rid of. And if I wanted a bike for "gravel" I'd get something that could take 40-42c tyres.
