  • I’ve heard the keys version was significantly improved over the rack. Depends if you want it sitting in a rack, playable or tabletop and what sort of bass...

  • Oh maybe I’m thinking of a second version then - I know there’s a much more recent bass station keyboard. That might be worth looking into, otherwise if you want classic acid bass then look at the various Roland TB boxes. Monologue and mini/microbrute have keys but are pretty knobby for other flavours of a similar price. My recommendations for mega bass and knobs would be Minitaur or odyssey module but they’re a step up in cost (and not particularly acidy).

  • My son has a korg little bits and a teenage engineering PO-20 arcade, is there a way to sync these together? Also can they connect to a midi out from my MPC?

  • Yeah but it's quite expensive for what it is.
    I think it's about $40 +shipping.
    I was thinking that I could get a second hand korg volca or something for a bit more money, then could connect it all through that and get some extra sounds/functions too.
    Do you think that would work?

  • Volca is midi-in only, although a midi-out hack is apparently pretty easy.

    They do the Korg sync thing too.

    Korg sync and the POs use a pulse so it might just work?

  • Yeah I saw the midi out hack and I'm happy to do that sort of thing.
    I thought it would work in a chain MPC midi to Volca pulse sync to the PO and then the little bits.

    What's the korg sync? Is it the app they do or is there some hardware I can't find?

    I'd rather a hardware solution

    No that's SyncKontrol. I was just referring to the pulse sync they use. It's 1/2 the frequency of most clocking I think.

  • Since getting the Electribe out to sell it, my son has been really getting to grips with it. He’s decided we can’t sell it.

  • Nice. Re sync, you may be able to get analog sync going to the PO by sacrificing a voice on either the MPC or electribe. Make a clicking sound with a quick attack and release and hard pan it to one of the outputs, connect that to the PO input. Sequence in 1/8 notes. You may have to tweak the sound but should be doable. The electribe and MPC will happily sync to each other via MIDI.

    That said, don't underestimate the power and convenience of just hitting 'play' on both devices at the same time ;)

  • Thanks for the tip, I’ll give it a try with the Electribe.
    Does that mean the sync in on the PO is just a regular 3.5mm jack? It’s not some special sync cable?
    I know this is very basic stuff but I’ve only ever made music with only records and an MPC before :) My son is already better at this stuff than me.

  • I think I’m going to sell my Microkorg as I haven’t opened the case for a couple of years!
    It’s been gigged and well used but perfect working order with the original mic and a padded gig bag (gator). I will take some photos later as I can’t remember if it has any anti-accidental-theft marker pen on it or other marks but from memory it’s pretty good cosmetically too.

  • That's right, analog sync is literally just an audio click over a jack.

  • I've always thought that a DAW was as much of an instrument as anything else, so how it makes you feel when you open it up is hugely important. I COULD write surf music on my acoustic guitar, or on my Les Paul, but something just doesn't feel right about it.

    Sometimes the guys who 'can't play' an instrument are the ones who revolutionise it. Look at Dick Dale - widely regarded as a one-note primitivist by 'proper' guitarists until the world caught up with him. We've not had a Dick Dale for the DAW yet, there's a definite gap!

  • That is supercool. God I wish I knew more about that world. I know it doesn't count as production as in the beat-making which most in this thread are to be into, but I have been recording again.

    Following the demise of my live band in December I took a bit of time off to lick wounds, have a bit of a re-think and examine exactly what it is I want to do next. The bottom line is that I want/need to continue writing and recording music. I've decided to try and get some new and hopefully interesting collaborative projects off the ground but i'm also going to spend some time capturing the best live solo performances of a whole raft of new and previously unrecorded material.

    To that end I've been giving some thought to the elements over which I have control in these seemingly simple productions, namely:

    • material
    • performance
    • room choice and placement in it
    • mic choice and placement
    • gain structure
    • processing and effects

    I was forced to buy Logic X following an OS update killing off 9 which was a bit of a bummer because it meant I lost all of my Softube 16 bit plugs including my go-to compressor, the CL-1B. I've still got a huge Waves bundle though and seem to be getting my head round the new interface in X. The "new" (not new at all is it?) EQs and compressors in X are actually great too.

    Hopefully giving some real attention to all of these elements is going to yield results i'm happy with. I always go for as natural and un-processed sound as possible as my ultimate goal so learning to manage gain staging and lay off the heavy EQ and gain reduction has been an education so far. It's something I always kinda knew anyway but had, I think, grossly underestimated in my previous attempts at after-the fact turd-polishing.
