The other problem is failure. If I overload a carbon frame I'm out >£1000; I almost certainly can't accidentally overload a Straggler, TdF, etc.

...that you seem to be in moon on a stick territory. Strong, light, cheap; pick any two.
I want strong and "cheap". That's why I'm looking at 4kg frames like the Straggler et al. At no time have I ever want a carbon fibre touring frame
