I'd like to say I used science by heating it up and other fancy stuff, and at the very least thought of sliding the cross brace through instead.. but I just removed the bolt, grabbed the open end with a pair of pliers, and bent it reaaal slow. Just enough so I could squeeze the bar through at the clamping area. Then I closed it again by putting it between the jaws of my massive vice, and went nice and slow again. No signs of metal fatigue, and I've been riding it a lot since! Long live cast alu!
So you just opened the stem up a bit? Surely that cross brace wouldn't go through the slot in the stem?
