I think the rule of thumb is that if you're over 11 stone you're best staying seated on longer climbs (unless you're very tall, there's a body mass equation but I can't find it). Short climbs = big ring out of the saddle smash it.

I am over 11 stone. But I am 6'3".
And, in my head, when I am out of the saddle I dance like Contador. For about 14 seconds.
Then I engage the granny ring and slide backwards to my own personal I-don't-go.
Living in Hong Kong for three years helped me but I think riding the turbo has been a massive help.
Shitty old fluid turbos with small flywheels don’t give you any help by creating lots of inertia, meaning it’s not dissimilar to climbing.
But - just go and ride lots of hills with guys who are faster. You’ll get there quickly.
