  • Just thinking through the alternatives, following yet another Pro One failure. Looking at the Mavics, but obvs don't want them exploding at any critical moments.

  • Following the latest non-sealing puncture, I had the realisation that all I actually need was this, a glueless patch on the inside of the tyre (having dried down and sanding the offending area, obvs).

    Fuck those anchovies and mushrooms.

  • Yeah but then you have to take the tyre off.

  • But they work, sealed up a sidewall puncture and looks tidier (in my opinion).

  • The tyre has to come off if you're using anchovies anyway, unless you want to risk stabbing your rim tape etc. when try to get the little blinders in. Also, no matter how close you trim the finished anchovy, you feel the bump each revolution.

    Having tried all the other methods, glueless patch is by far the quickest and pleasant solution. Cheaper too.

    If I'm on the road I don't want to be taking a tyre off, getting covered in sealant, cleaning away sealant and then trying to get an internal patch to stick, unless I really have to.

  • Conversely I've never had a problem puttin anchovies in with the tire on the bike, tend to just ride for a few hours with excess anchovie hanging out then trim

  • Yeah, you put the anchovy in when the tyre is on the bike and inflated. If the tyre is inflated then the stabber tool is not going to be long enough to reach to the rim tape. I trim off the excess with a little knife (that came with a Weldite tubeless repair kit) although you can of course just ride it off.

  • I bought a 1L Effetto Mariposa Caffelatex Sealant (60ml, 250ml and 1000ml × 1) of him (cycleclinic).

    I put ~30ml in a front tyre and then snapped the frame of the only bike the wheel was usable on. You're welcome to use some of mine if you want to test it.

  • Thanks for the tip. I just get paranoid I'm going to ruin the rim tape by going too deep, but I was doing it wrong in having deflated the tyre first.

  • No worries. I only know because the fella in the bike shop actually demonstrated it to me when he was explaining how to fix tubeless tyres :)

  • Nope barely noticed. How high a PSi are you running?

    I do however run 35c - 40c G ones, I just end up trimming them to as close to the same lenght as the nobbles.

  • Ah, I'm running 80-90psi on Pro One slicks, so any protrusion in instantly noticeable, though granted it does flatten over time and it just looks like you've got chewing gum stuck on your tyre.

  • Nope, filled it with sealant and it has been laying under my bed since. The replacement bike will have a thru-axle fork so I won't even be able to use that wheel on it. Tubeless yay :S

    You should be able to drop some pressure when you go from tubes to tubeless

  • 25's, but old habits die hard, but to me even 80psi is like running with a puncture. Perhaps I need to go further, though I did manage to ride home on 20psi the other night.
