Thanks, that's pretty much what I've been reading elsewhere too this morning.
Some of the more informative articles I've found:

Any recommendations for a dual monitor wall bracket? Preferably cheap but maneuverable.

Everyone is going to have their own opinion on builds but mine is wayyyy too much money on cpu vs gpu. Get a 1060 at least. With the right bits you could have a dual boot hack for sketch and games. I’ve just bought a new case so may have some spare parts if ya fancy second hand?

An 850 W, £150 power supply is overkill.
GTX 1060 official spec says it needs 400 W and an i7-8700K less than 100 W. The other components use barely any power.Use one of the online calculators but will be surprised if you need over 450 W.

Aren't PSU, broadly speaking, most efficient at around 50% of their capacity?
-
• #4183
Oh I have a spare EVGA good psu too. 650w?
-
• #4184
By a tiny amount. But the components aren't pulling anything like their maximum power rating. Here's a review showing a GTX 1060 at about 120 W at full whack: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1060-pascal,4679-6.html

Everyone port your stuff to SPARC!
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/16/oracle_quarterly_patches_jan_2018/
Oracle believes that certain versions of Oracle Solaris on SPARCv9 are affected by the Spectre vulnerabilities.
Time to dig out the PowerPCs and Itaniums
-
• #4186
Wouldn't be surprised if most high end CPUs suffer from some form of Spectre; speculative execution is a mainstay in higher end CPUs.
Today's Oracle CPU is making work for me in more than one way.

Amd 8000 series CPU's aren't affected. Which is good for me because I have a 8350

I have finally taken delivery of my EVGA Hadron case, it's taken near 2 years to track one down and I am pretty happy with it.
As a result my Bitfenix Phenom is going spare, along with a high end EVGA PSU (Modular, 650W Gold rated I think) and a cheap MATX mobo, 250 something... or maybe 270... it was £50 wish new.
Case £30
PSU £50
Mobo £25Anyone interested?
@Well_is_it take it all and I'll give ya a discount. -
• #4189
Interested - what mobo?
-
• #4190
Awesome. I may have undersold/priced the mobo as Amazon claims it was more than I thought, but, like, whatever... it's this one...
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01MQWCNA6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
oh and the PSU is this one... barely used. Mobo has been used prob about 6 times.

Still looking - Any recommendations for a dual monitor wall bracket? Preferably cheap but maneuverable.

• #4192
Ooo might be interested in all three then! Will PM.
Any suggestions from the hive mind on a budget CPU I could put with that (ie LGA1151)? No need for gaming or anything. That being said, is it even sensible to be buying an Intel CPU right now?! -
• #4193
Pm’d ya back.
For anything but serious workloads I go for high clock speed i3’s. -
• #4194
Anyone have a second hand LGA1151 CPU or some DDR4 RAM lurking around? A kabylake i3 or pentium would be spot on.

I'm always running low on space on my work computer C: drive. Can I, in theory, partition off part of my D drive and use W10 'storage spaces' to expand the space on C, or is this a really bad idea?
I know some things might run a bit slower as they'll be reading off the D: drive rather than the SSD C:

I used symlinks to shift some stuff from C: to D: drive

You can easily change the location of all your Documents, Music, Pictures etc. There's no practical benefit in having those on the SSD. Just right-click on the folders, go to properties and then the location tab.

All that stuff's on D, most files stored on the network anyway. C's just chocka with software.
Edit, nevermind, I clawed back 20Gb, that'll do for now.
There isn't really anything you can do apart from download a patch for your OS whenever it becomes available.
