  • How much? Maybe I could try them for fit somewhere, I mean, what else are bike shops for? ;)

  • I think I bought another pair. As I have some 46 empire too. I have more cycling shoes that normal shoes.

  • What size are your shimano. That’s what you’ll need in giro.

  • I have more cycling shoes that normal shoes.

You say that as though you expect it to be exceptional.

  • 47

With enough force I can make anything fit in anything else though so 46 should be fine :)

  • Only because he doesn't count his collection of high heels as 'normal shoes'.

  • No chance. Unless you cut the clubs off.

  • Perhaps not on here.

  • I seem to remember paying £140 for them.

Which post-Brexit, is £100 to you.

They're ACC, I'm keeping the SLX.

  • You didn't wear them on the A4 10mi though did you? soniamdisappoint.jpg

  • They're ACC, I'm keeping the SLX.

I don't know what that means.

What about Speedplay aero cleats? Are they better or worse than the ones I have now (that I'm running out of since so many of those C-springs have turned into metal flakes).

  • You didn't wear them on the A4 10mi though did you?

No, because I always remember to take my race shoes to races.

  • Different types of carbon: SLX is the lighter and more expensive of the two.

I don't know anyone who goes throw C-springs like you so I couldn't say , but I'm not aware that the actual hardware has changed.

I switched a while back, as the price difference was the price of a pair of Keep-on Kovers which I went through (ie lost) like, er... C-springs.

Academic anyway, as I read elsewhere that SP have shelved the non-aero version...

  • The knee-highs?

    All about the aero

  • I think the plastic wears out with use and that allows vertical flex in the spring and then they start breaking bits off and eventually snap in the middle so they're no longer a spring. I've done it on three pairs of shoes so far so it's not specific to my cheapie pair.

  • Are they going to be any faster aerodynamically than the old ones? Did I imagine Xav posting a pic of them in test a while back. Why do I think I may have posted it here myself? Hmm

  • Speedplay or Empires? There's a watt or two to be had with the full aero Speedplay setup, but I can't SLX Empires being faster than ACC.

  • The new Speedplay cleats I meant, over the old v1 and v2 versions.

  • The last of our Xmas questions is about the aero properties of pedals. Tim Kingston asks:

"Pedals - noticeable aero difference between brands eg. Speedplay, Look aero, Time etc.?"

Unfortunately with the rider on board it can be very difficult to establish aerodynamic changes when pedals have different stack heights and amounts of float, both of which can affect your whole body aerodynamics as it changes the position of the rider. Generally we aim for a lower stack height, as this is not only biomechanically more efficient, but also moves the rider closer to the ground where the wind speed is zero, which is often more aerodynamic as well.

However, we recently did some CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) work in our Virtual Wind Tunnel on a new pedal system from Speedplay, the Zero Aero.

This new pedal system has a special cleat which integrates with the underside of the aero pedal to create a seamless join. We tested a Bont Vaypor+ shoe equipped with a Speedplay Zero pedal first, followed by a Speedplay Zero Aero pedal and cleat set.

This test was just on a static shoe (with no rider!) as you can see on the photos, but at 30mph the shoe with the Zero pedal/cleat was creating 5.2w of aerodynamic drag, and with the Zero Aero pedal/cleat 4w. With a moving pair of legs and feet in the real world we'd expect to see a range of around 1.5-2.5w with both pedals and cleats upgraded to this new aero system.

Ensuring that even your shoes and pedals are aerodynamic is important to making sure you go as fast as possible!

  • £200 though.

  • 58T Chainring that will work as a single ring, and not slip the chain?

    That doesn't cost the earth.

  • Just run a chainguide and use whatever you want. I sold my DA9000 full aero carbon one. Soz.

  • speedplay aero cleats.
