Things are way different in Japan. People ride crap bikes everywhere (pavement is fine) and cars are very respectful. And fixies/SS are very common.
So while it is very stupid I don't think it's a death trap as you'd be a lot safer riding that in Japan rather than here.
Edit: but yeah it's just not finished I think

It's just a display bike. Pretty sure they wouldn't leave the price tags hanging from the chain either.

Yeah I'm probably over thinking it. Although having seen Japanese bikes with unusable brake levers mounted under saddles and stuff just to get around the law I wouldn't be surprised!

Was in Osaka back in the summer. Hoped to see lots of sweet fixiebikes there, saw very few and those I did see were absolute horrors. Lots of stupid wheels like in the above photo, and I saw one guy on a wood effect frame. Also almost all with frame-too-big level low saddles.
Lots of very nice bikes in Track Supermarket though. But the prices, sheeeeeesh.

This seems to be the only photo I got of a bike in Japan. No idea how it works.
(Not suggesting it's anti, just posting it as it seems relevant)
Edit: it had two top tubes, thought I got a photo from the side but apparently not. I think I eventually figured out it was a Chinese Flying Pigeon

A friend of mine has something similar, a 'japanese postmans bike' he picked up off here. Also has rod brakes and is an absolute tank

What's tan, what's gold, who knows, who cares, it's fucking awful.
Edit: purely as a matter of colour preference - I don't hate the build
Are the brake calipers with missing cables possibly there to make the bike appear to be road legal whilst still being a brakeless, foot retentionless, cool guy only death trap?
