We used to rebuild lot too, but my dad was always really insistent on everything being put away in its own box at the end of the day (not just Lego, we've got a load of boxed playmobil too...). 30 years later, it was all found in his loft boxed, covered and organised.
Thanks for the space post - that stuff seems a pretty wide range. I definitely remember a few more that we have - it's funny how some had been wiped from memory, but seeing them again they look so familiar.

On another note, I'm always amazed that people were able to keep such sets together. I always rebuilt everything lots of times, lost stuff, swapped with friends, etc.
