Ah, prolonged lurking on the Paceline should turn one up in the end I suppose.

Cut off the manky end and turn it upside down if there's enough overlap in use at the other end. Hammer the new end flat and drill it to the axle diameter. Maybe.
Or get a length of 15mm copper pipe from a skip cut it to the right length, flatten and drill and it will do for a while.

I take it you're aware they do a carbon breakaway now, which is rather spiffy? Although I too have a soft spot for the Ti version.

When people say something bike-related is "ceramic" what does that actually mean? All I know is it's expensive, so I kind of do a mental nod of recognition while picturing a teapot and move swiftly on.

They're made out of bathroom tiles just like those white knife blades.

If you mean ceramic bearings I think the most common materials are silicon carbide or silicon nitride.

Non metallic, non organic, very hard shit, like Silicon Nitride, above.

The class of material is simply 'ceramic' but that term covers a whole load of materials and applications from the stuff you eat off to stuff that goes in to armor etc.
