The focus ring takes an eternity to turn and candid portraits are hard to nail, dont get me wrong its a great camera and takes fantastic images but it takes time and I have to be methodical.

For candids have you tried using zone focusing ? With a 50mm lens set at f11 and focused to 25 feet pretty much everything from 12 feet to infinity will be in focus. Set an appropriate shutter speed for the shadows and you can use it as point and shoot more or less.
It's what I do with my Nettar which as a viewfinder only camera I'd be relying on guessing distances if it wasn't for zone focusing.

In what way are you missing shots with it ? The lens is supposed to be pretty good, so it may be a case of technique* rather than a problem with the camera
