  • Recognise a few riders in there

    Wacker, Ryszard, Stephane, Doug Midgen

    Jesse Stauffer raced first TABR

  • Thanks (for links)

  • Full roster has been posted.

Not surprised Kristof not doing it again - it's a long way and he probably had to get time off school (he's a teacher) so a one-off.
Jesse and Sarah are doing the TAW. And Jesse said after last year's race that he was relieved he wasn't riding when Mike was killed, so he could do what needed to be done, taking decisions re cancelling, notifying people, talking to press, etc.

A handful of the guys I met last year are riding again:
Matthijs Ligt was in good shape last year, was one of the early leaders but had bad saddle sores, infected, etc. So he could be near the front again.
Harley Johnstone - aka Durianrider. He's a pretty controversial vlogger over there, but he seemed a pleasant guy in real life. He had to pack early last time then started doing media stuff.
Doug Midgen - he's really experienced at this stuff, done a couple of TCR's, etc. I had dinner with him and Mike at the before party last time.
Ryan Flinn - he works for Curve now (Jesse's bike brand). Seemed a pleasant guy, and good at PR, marketing, etc.

Also Louise Soplanit, in the teams, has done one or more TCRs. Not met her but recognise the name.

I don't think I know any others. I didn't meet the two UK guys who also did it last time, Daniel Cooper & Daniel Welch. I think they were a bit down the field.

Overall the field is slightly smaller than last year. I wouldn't be surprised if everyone who wanted to ride has got a place, just Jesse did his marketing stuff making people belive they would miss out.

    And no Jensie!

Surprised there are so many teams. That seemed a bit of an unlikley one to me with the first guy doing over half the distance, but I guess a lot of people can only take x days holiday so it allows them to be involved.

There may be some fast Aussies that we don't know but, if I had to pick a winner, I'd say it was between Matthijs (who has been training hard recently, from facebook chatter, etc) and Stephane.

  • Nice run-down Frank. There is also David Barstow Robinson, who completed the TABR last year and keeps an instagram at https://www.instagram.com/barstow/ . He did an interesting podcast last year about his experiences of the Trans-America, it's a good listen, gets going about thirty minutes in: http://sprocketpodcast.blubrry.com/e365-dbr-does-tabr/ . Pulling for him if he starts IPWR.

  • I made a Strava group for those of us who are racing and I could easily find on there. Just another dynamic for people to analyse if they so please. Maybe it'll inspire me to train harder lol!

  • IndyPac 2017 blog post, day 2.

I think I've got the hang of the links now.

  • Thanks for the write-up, Frank! Very interesting read. Bracing myself for some hairy encounters.

I think I've also decided that I'll be going for a dynamo hub. Seems to only cost 0.5-2% of your energy, which is 100km over the course of the entire race. I feel like it would save a lot of stress and avoid some bad / time-wasting situations. Plus I am sure almost everyone will be racing with one so everyone will be on a level playing field in that regard anyway.

I've just ordered some juicy deep rims. I think these should do the trick? They seem to come up as the best performing hubs everywhere I look. Unless anyone has any info to the contrary?

    Shimano SV-9:

  • @Skülly had some issues with a dynamo hub making deep rims flexy on rim brakes.

  • Are rim dynamos an option? Can be disengaged, right? http://www.elessarbicycle.it/velogical-dynamo-review/

  • How so? Flanges not wide enough so caused greater lateral flex than usual?

  • No.

Dynamo shell too narrow, lowish profile carbon rim not deep.

I almost got one of those for IndyPac. But the charging options weren't quite there. May be sorted out now.
At least one rider has used one for TCR.

  • Wouldn't this be the case for every wheel then with a dynamo then?

Which hub were you using? How many spokes / what lacing pattern?

  • Getting things together. Will be posting build progress shortly...

  • I'm really happy you got a place and are going for it fixed.

  • From what I can tell, no. Used the Shutter 9 for rim brake (disc would have meant I may not have noticed the flex), 24spokes bladed, 36mm deep x 28 wide carbon rim. 2x

The first thing I would change to fix the problem would be to use the schmidt wide body hub. The shutter is really narrow. Maybe 28h would been better. The spokes aren't particularly light or flimsy.

  • +1 for schmidt hubs

  • Been chatting with @frank9755 and come to the conclusion that I won't be building a wheelset with a dynamo. Going to stick with what I know - battery packs.

Ordering parts for the bike. Will post some pictures of the progress. Using a Dolan FXE for the frame.

  • You’ll be fine with battery. Evan won TABR last year with 303’s and good battery’s - minimal issues by the sounds of it

  • Pay for your stickers.

  • He'd raced it three times though so knew where stops were and likely had a very good idea how long it would take to reach them. Dynamos are nice for saving the arses of people like me who do less planning and make dumb decisions.

  • Do people take small locks for races like this? Or is my London mentality too ingrained?

  • Dont you have an audax to go do?

  • I carry one but don't use it often. Just as a deterrent if i have to stop and there's some unsavouries hanging around or I'm going to be longer (ie. taking a shit). After about three days you're just hoping someone will steal your bike so you can go home anyway.
