Santana Tandem, sold

  • Hi there, it's time to part with our beloved tandem.

It was bought a while ago as upgrade on our Dawes Super Galaxy, which it most definitely was. We taken it to a couple of jaunts here in the UK, and a Summer trip to France. This was our third tandem, and the things we appreciated the most over the previous ones we owned were the extra room for the stoker (rear top tube is around 700mm), the generous disc brakes, and the 26in wheels. And the paint, of course!

It's very stable, gives a grounded feeling that makes me unafraid of tight spaces even when loaded. I don't know how much the 26in wheels contribute to that, but it feels much nicer to maneuver than the 700c Dawes. It's good to have a bit of extra strength in the wheels too.

The bike is built to a high spec, if not avant garde stuff:

    • Santana Fusion SE, Columbus tubing
    • Hope hubs laced to Exal KM19 xlite rims
    • Shimano Ultegra triple cranks
    • New Specialites TA chainrings
    • Shimano Dura Ace levers, with Flight Deck (very handy on a tandem to check gears)
    • Shimano XT rear derailleur, long cage
    • Avid Single Digit 5 + Avid BB5 brakes
    • Hope 203mm disc rotor on rear
    • Crane Creek Thudbuster rear seatpost
    • Crane Creek headset
    • Tubus titanium rear rack
    • Nitto front rack
    • Schwalbe Marathon tires

    Measurements are:

    • Seat tube, captain, 56cm ctt
    • Tot tube, captain, 60cm virtual
    • Seat tube, stoker, 51cm ctt
    • Top tube, stoker, 70cm ctc (I know it's obvious, but please note the stem eats back some of this as it points backwards)

Please feel free to request any detail you might want to see pictured. I'll add below a couple of photos from our travels, just to show how it looks loaded. By the way, reason of sale is because we're set on another tandem, this time with couplers as our plans are getting a bit more adventurous. I guess we can blame the Santana for hooking us up on that :)

Lastly, we're after £1,500 for it.

    Thanks for looking.

  • In its element:

  • Pretending to be part of PBP:

  • that rear disc looks ferocious

  • Some other pics from travels

  • New pictures! This is the tandem today, in its selling spec.
Saddles are Terry Butterflies, pedals are generic stuff.

  • That is so mega!

  • How short/tall stoker would this fit. Looks like lots of reach?

  • I'd say from 160cm onwards (sorry, metrics). The limiter is the thudbuster insertion on the seat tube. On the higher end, it's nor really limited, I'm 188cm and I've been in the back already.

The stoker top tube is 700mm, but then the stem eats back a good amount of that. The stem is adjustable, so reach is easily adjusted. The amount of room on the back was one of the reasons that made us change from a Super Galaxy to this one. Less crammed, much nicer for the stoker.

I think nowadays all of Santana, Co-Motion, Cannondale, and Thorn make tandems with around 700mm stoker tube.

  • Bit more detailed dimensions

  • Bump for a lovely bargain

  • What're the seat tube angles there?

  • They're 74º.

I found some info on the tubing as well, it's Columbus chromoly drawn to 8/5/8 thickness (0.8mm / 0.5mm / 0.8mm).

  • Sold. That was sad.
