  • Definitely not

  • :( what's it doing?

  • A whole variety of cheap Rasperry Pi stuff on the WD website
    https://www.wdc.com/en-gb/products/wdlabs.html

Quite like the idea of the HDDs with multiple pi images on them for tinkering.

  • Suspect that the router is giving the computers a fixed address, below the address of the pi.

Bought a new asus nighthawk router. Lets see if that is any better.

  • Hmm, so did you use the pi as the DHCP server? If so, I think I had to restart a few things before they'd pick up a new IP address from the pi and start using it as the local DNS server as well. Obviously had to switch off the router's DHCP server at the same time as switching the pi's one on.

  • Yep you need their DHCP leases to expire. A reboot will usually do this. On some clients you can manually do it. e.g. on windows:

    ipconfig /renew

    .

  • Thanks for the help,

The Pi is set up as the DHCP server, the issue is that the bt6 router is giving fixed DCHP address to certain computers but the router doesn't seem to want to change.

Decided on a nighthawk AC1900 and will see it is better.

  • Did you have any static IPs allocated on the BT router? If so, I seem to remember something about switching those off before switching the BT router DHCP server off.

Oh and also did you remember to change the gateway on the pihole DHCP server to 192.168.1.254 (or whatever your router's gateway IP is)?

  • Think it is just BT products locked an annoying.

  • If you're a Pi fan you'll probably know the backstory but this is nonetheless worth a listen

(I actually bought my first Pi from Eben himself in 2012 when he was giving a talk at Google about the company and his motivations in setting it up)

  • Nice, will check that out!

Got a new Pi project planned, I think. I picked up a cheap refurb 4TB WD MyBook and I've got a spare Pi3.

I've found out about NextCloudPi, which seems like a cool idea. I like the idea of an opensource personal 'cloud' with a mobile app that'll sync pictures etc, much as Dropbox etc do, but with the data on my own discs. Not sure how well it'll run, but it seems to be an actual thing and will be a learning experience...

The alternative is to get hold of an old(ish) HP ProLiant microserver and work that up into a proper NextCloud box (and presumably with enough power for it to do other stuff at the same time). But that's a) not really for this thread and b) way out of my area of expertise, but would again be a learning experience...

PS-if anyone does have an old microserver kicking about, let me know!

  • Here's one that combines Pi with cycling... i was looking for a way to use my old Tacx turbo with Zwift and came across a project that takes the USB Tacx data and converts it to ANT+ for Zwift.... looks like that can vbe done witha Pi, then run Zwift on laptop/ipad/whatever..... I'm going to give it a go when I can get the turbo out of storage...anyone else tried it??

  • Niiiice. Bit frustrating as I've just bought 5 3's for the robotics society here but such is life.

  • I was literally googling if there were any updates on the horizon over the weekend.

That said, I only use it for PiHole, so even the 1B+ is overkill.

  • Yeah, I bought a couple of normal 3Bs not long ago after having read a piece by Eben in which he said that RP would focus more of its attention on software. I guess that being a hardware guy he just loves to fiddle :)

The Robotics Society sounds interesting. What's that about?

  • It's a student society at university, facilitating kids building robots. We basically buy the kit and help them through the basics of programming arduinos, hooking up sensors etc. I bought the Pi's as getting arduino ide on uni PCs is a pain in the dick, so they're going to be setup as mini dev-stations for those students without laptops

  • Good for you. I love the accessibility of cheap kit like Raspberry Pis and Arduinos, and how they are clearly driving a renaissance in coding skills, thereby putting to an end to the sorry era of governments thinking that teaching people how to use MS Office was sufficient for modern life.

  • Just doing some house-keeping, dd-ing the sd to a fresh card, updates etc and it crossed my mind to move everything to usb storage for the sake of speed & endurance.

I have a pi 1B so not sure if usb boot will work (as usual, it depends). Currently, pihole has logging disabled to minimise writes and it's a very lite install with various packages purged.

Sd card is some Sandisk Ultra that's been a trooper since day 1 - backup is an identical card but fresh. Power supply is ample and enough amps for a usb stick to not even register.

Would it be introducing unnecessary complexity moving to usb as primary storage? As un-optimal as an sd boot disk is, there's a certain purity to the way it's currently set up...

  • Absolutely, especially in earlier education. I worked on a project taking BBC microbits into schools and that was fantastic, kids really grasping graphical programming.

  • That was a great read. Good find.

  • Anyone after a 3b? Thought I’d try here before classified, before (shudder) eBay.
£30 posted? Or pipe up if that’s too high. OG power adaptor, case and I’ll chuck in an SD card because there appears to be one in the slot already.

  • Already getting rid ';)

  • Walked away from setting up piihole. Trying to set up with a hh6 seems difficult so should upgrade the router... I used to be able to write fortran and cobol programs...ffs

    Router issues.
