  • My girlfriend has an old 13" MBP with a dead battery, she only uses it plugged in... I can't find a legit replacement battery anywhere, also too scared to buy a dodgy unit that will probably burn our house down...

  • Change your default browser to Safari and change it back to chrome - that fixed the issue

  • Cheers, will give it a whirl.

  • Nope : /

Links opened in Safari but when I went back to Chrome they just went straight to the homepage again. Will reinstall Chrome when I get a mo.

  • Appears it's my SSD that gone bust. Won't be read through paragon when plugged into my windows laptop.

Any ideas on reading it? There are a few things I could do with getting off it. School boy.

  • Also how do I create a high sierra boot from windows?

    Apparently you can't. :(

  • If you can't see the SSD on two different machines, I think it's fair to assume it's very dead. Unlike HDDs, they tend to fail conpletely. I hope you had backups...

  • You need a friend with a Mac. I didn't have one, so I resorted to buying a USB stick off eBay. This was for my OSX virtualization project.

Edit: a quick search seems to suggest you can do it with a trial of TransMac. Not sure why I didn't try this.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro's became 'vintage' in January 2017. This means Apple no longer service them.

  • My wife has an iphone SE and it constantly prompts her to enter her Apple ID for the itunes store. She enters her email and password then 30 seconds later it asks for the info again. She is unable to update or download anything from the Appe store.

    We have tried:
    Updated to the latest iOS
    Hard reset
    Back up and factory restore

    Any other suggestions?

Edit - did a “reset all settings” and it solved the issue.

  • Had the same thing happen, no way of recovering data. SSD failure is not like HDD, it's just gone. No doubt there are components that fail which could be replaced though but on such tiny circuits you'd need to be very very talented.

In which case you'd probably have backups. :)

  • Had this happen. Update Chrome to the latest version and re-start your machine.

  • Downloaded high sierra bootable from an online source. So I’ll give that a whirl on a different hd.

And damn. Everything is backed up, apart from my entire life’s photo collection. Serves me right for not ensuring. Dickhead.

Time to take it to a specialist to see if they can recover.

And a timely reminder to everyone. Ensure you’ve backed everything up!

  • Talk to me about iPad pro. Worth the extra monies?

I'll be doing general stuff, some photo editing, checking designs in Sketch mirror etc.

  • I've heard good things but bear in mind that a new one is expected this year which has full screen OLED like the iphone X....

  • This year as in spring or later on? My first gen ipad mini is s l o w

  • I rly want one but im holding out in hope of a 2018 12,9 with a smaller bezel / no home button..

could be waiting till autumn though it seems

  • Everything points to September i'm afraid.

  • New hard drive. And it won’t load the bootable usb. Just gives a grey screen after first progress bar. So it can’t be the hard drive. Something else. Bet it’s the graphics card, already had the logic board replaced under replacement scheme. Ffs

Which made me remember my main mac hard drive is encrypted. That’s why it wouldn’t show up on the windows machine, but the non encrypted one would.

Time to go buy a new laptop. Those logic boards are £600 or so.

  • Surely even an encrypted HDD will show up on another machine in something a bit lower level than the file manager. Like the BIOS, Device Manager or Disk Management utility in Windows or Disks utility in Ubuntu or similar?

  • Yeah it shows in disk manager. But I can’t get it to show in 3D party hfs reader.

I don’t have a 2nd Mac at home. That’s my issue. My 2nd machine is windows, which makes it complicated.

I’ll plug it into a friends and boot from it the unencrypt and copy the stuff off.

  • Do I really have to spend 80 fucking quid on a new magsafe charger after I left mine on the coach just now? National Express want 20 quid to return it but it'll take weeks. Non-brand ones safe?

  • I have a 45W one, I think it's Apple's as it's heavy and looks legit with all the correct logos etc, but I am not 100%.

Story: Mac got stolen long time ago so borrowed a Mac from a friend without charger, so I helped myself to one from lost property at work.

    https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MC747B/B/apple-45w-magsafe-power-adapter-for-macbook-air

So if you wanna risk it, you are welcome to borrow it until you get yours back?

Why would national express want money to give you back your stuff? Postage? Admin?

  • I’ve been using Chinese one for a few years. Bought from eBay for 20.

  • That's really kind thank you - though when I woke up this morning I realised I'd need it for the weekend as I'm off on a week of shooting from Saturday and tied up today, so might as well suck it up and pop down to the Apple store at lunch. At least the wire will be white and not 'dirt' coloured : /

Annoyingly EVERY review of the charger on the Mac website says it's awful quality and they need replacing every year - I've had mine since I bought the laptop and it's been fine - hope they haven't changed the recipe or something :/
