I'm running 1x10 Shimano on my gravel bike, regular old Saint chainring and no chain guard. Have had one chain drop total, really no problem. I'm using an 11-42 cassette with a rd-m750 and a wolftooth roadlink, works a charm.
I'm also using bb7s on it, make sure to get compressionless brake housing, makes a world of difference! (I used a jagwire road pro cable kit)
