  • Here's a cheerful video on the OM1.
Voice reminding me of Gordon Cole, which is a bonus.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR3SLH6dFuQ

  • Getting a bit annoyed with Sendean, they've quoted £375 to repair my OM4, which is massive but apparently includes "repairing or replacing parts". But they won't tell me if any parts need actually need replacing, and the price stays the same regardless.

I've been quoted £135 somewhere else to do the same work, but that price would go up if any parts needed replacing.

I don't mind spending the money if parts do need replacing, but I'm loathed to pay it on the off-chance they might...

  • You can buy one for a bit less than that.

  • I know, and I'm tempted to if this one didn't have such sentimental value. But £375 is still £375, and potentially £200 more than what actually needs doing to do it

  • Can’t they charge you something for investigation work, then call with a quote for the fix? Otherwise the £375 has got to be a maximum-possible-ballache figure (which you pay regardless of actual ballache).

The former is what garages, laptop repair places often do unless it’s a rush job.

  • That seems mighty expensive.

I have a Pentax ME Super which has sentimental value, payed £125 to get it repaired - top plate replaced, mirror lock up sorted, light seals replaced, CLA'ed etc

  • The only camera that got sentimental value to me broke at one point and then got stolen so that's that.

  • They did eventually tell me the circuit board has gone, so will need repairing and most likely replacing. The parts are getting rare as gold rocking hens dust, so not surprising it’s costing a bomb. I decided it’s bound to break beyond repair eventually, and will only get increasingly expensive to fix, so get it done now.

  • my GF1 screen is broken - colours are all off, still takes pictures ok. Could be a loose connection? It got dropped yesterday.

    EDIT. Seems ok now

  • Have a chance to buy a used 5D mk2 and Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM for about £1000. This is a v good lens and a great price is it not?

  • Surely it is, a used 5D Mk2 used is around 800€ and the 24-70 2.8 L USM lens are for 600€ used. I can say it isa good price, but depends how the SLR is and how it was used, same for the lens

  • What condition and shutter count?
You can get the 5d Mkii body for under £600.

Actually that does look like a good deal with that lens.

  • For that combination, seems like a good deal unless they're both battered.

  • Someone else got it unfortunately. First I was like :D then I was like :-|

  • Right. I love my FM2 but miss my Nikon DSLR, and want to get back in the game. Looking at old second-hand FX bodies, it looks like the D700 and D600 are roughly the same price, (~ £500) for a decent condition, low shutter count model, (Aperture have one of each for ~ £60 difference in price).

I know the D700 is older, but I understand that the body is more robust. But, the D600 is much newer, higher pixel count, smaller body. Which would folk recommend or choose?

  • Tricky. I sold my D700 because I never really got on with it. The body is pretty sturdy though. I haven't used the D600 but bought a DF which I really like. It is closest thing in digital to an FM2. They are pricey though.

  • anyone selling Nikon D7200 or similar? open to suggestions....

  • Yes abd no, as a combo Yeah, the 24-70 was a kit lens on those and are great to have

5d2 I've been very surprised by how they hold up value wise, considering 6d and 5d3 aren't that much more used and are at least 1x if not 1.5x generation newer in every respect.

I was looking for a used 6d but new price has now been dropped by Canon to 985£ from around 1095£ (and was closer to £1400 at launch 5 years ago). Used the cheapest most beaten down one is £550, £650 gets a used one with 50k drops and some video hours in ok condition with upto q 12 month limited warranty from a camera shop

But £760 gets you a new one from a highly reputed shop in hk, including vat/duties. Grey import so no canon UK warranty but they are reputable when dealing with warranty.
Think I'm gonna pull thr trigger on it, much rather new than a used eCampbell that could be as much as 5 years old and have hundreds/thousands of hours open shutter, been repaired by anyone etc, which is fair enough if a reasonable price for a 5 year old electrical item.
Always think used dslr body are way too much £££.

Anyone any horror stories buying from e-infin?

  • The D700 is great.

Maybe look for both and see which clean low shutter-count examples emerge.

  • Yes, don't get me wrong it's a good camera. But I was using it as a D3 backup and it isn't, despite Nikon's claims to the contrary.

  • Can anyone make any recommendations as to a more affordable printer for home? I thinking of getting something so I can cheaply print out images for my wall. Just 10x8's nothing large scale. Been looking at the HP envy range but I'd welcome some suggestions

  • Best stills camera I've ever owned. Bought one used at 60k shutter actuations; sold it at around 120k - still working flawlessly - to get on the Fuji bus, which I've always regretted a bit (not the Fuji bit, but selling that camera body).

12 megapixels is more than enough for most applications - I printed some very nice A1 prints from the files. It's fast to work with, robust, the metering and AWB is mostly great, good battery life - and they seem to be holding their value incredibly well.

    If you don't want/ need video (I now have a D750), I'd pick it over a D600 any day.

  • When I last looked into this my conclusion was that printing stuff out using one of the online photo places was cheaper than buying a printer given the cost of the consumables.

  • Yes I kept the D3s but sold the D700 to fund (sadly only partly) a DF, rather than a Fuji, but I'm aware that it is a minority taste.

  • Hmm HP offer a subscription service, something like £1.99 / month for 300 prints. But I suppose the paper is what is expensive
