Running a big cog so you can run a big ring always feels like stuffing your trousers.
I think the opposite. Trying to run a 14 or 15t cog and having to use a 46t chainring looks ridiculous. Bigger gears are more efficient than smaller ones of the same ratio.
If you sometimes use that bike on track then why not run a big ring and big cog when you're riding it around town?
