  • depends how much damage you do to yourself, you wont have fully physically recovered from the effort if you go all out, but you'd probably be recovered enough for the lower effort levels required for a 12, I think I was just back to healed in the saddle area a week after the race.

    The ECCA 100 closed on 4:08:48 last year and given the comp record this year I've firmly ticked the reserve box on this one with my 3:58 LTS

  • Yeah, I saw that, my only 100 is a 4:08 something but I'm in an ECCA club so should get in ok.

  • That's one of the races @Cycliste and I have in our diaries already. Hopefully being in an ECCA club with an LTS of 3:56 (albeit a very long 3:56) will be enough. And hopefully @Cycliste won't crash this time, and will be able to take another chunk out of the club record.

  • In my very unscientific tests, riding a 12hr before a 24hr is about 20mi better than doing it the other way around, even with ~3wks in between

    ISTR you overtook me a bit earlier in the day when you'd already done the 24

  • Tricky thing is, you can only enter the ECCA event (10 riders I think) OR the main one. If I knew I would get into the main one, I would enter it to leave the ECCA places open for their own event.

  • The Newbury conditions were probably 10mi better than the Nationals at ECCA that year but there was definitely still an aspect of fatigue. I went out much harder in the Newbury and hung on pretty well whereas I was running on fumes (mental and physical) at the Nationals.

  • my clubs record for the 12hr is 271 miles which as I use a road bike is unatainable at my level. Dale sturman also has the 24hr club record at 441 miles. That is more achievable now how do I get to that level its only 18.37 mph for 24hrs. Easy in it.... actually how on a road bike I will have to eat on the go, maybe nap while riding. What can I eat on the go thats is actual food - what do folk eat for these. sugary stuff churns my stomach. last year I had to stop way to much and eat pasta, scotch eggs, sausage rolls, m&ms coffee, coke cola chocolate donuts i.e food that took time to eat. Need a better way. 7 months to find it.

    I would ride a 12hrs after a 100 miler. last summer I did the 24hr then a week later a 12hr. the following wednesday i raced and got a result. sometimes you can big rides in a row (it did not last though my legs went flat in september)

  • As I said above, it depends how deep you go and how much you 'want it'.
    I couldn't walk properly after my 518mi 24hr and 3 weeks later did a 270-ish 12hr in windy conditions (other riders were ~10mi down on previous distances). When the Newbury was introduced it was before the 24hr and better conditions, as such I PBd it with a 293mi (with excess stoppage due to number pins coming out a couple of times and sticking me).

    What sort of sugary stuff? Carbohydrates are your friend if you want to go fast. All the foods you list save for coke are high in fat which slow gastric emptying and likely make getting enough carbs in a problem after a time.

  • I reckoned it was 5 miles better, based on what I did, but that kind of ballpark. You were flying that day at the Newbury, looked significantly faster than topham at the end (he passed me around the same time)

    I think that is the key, you've got time to try things out and it does take time to get happy with it.

    I use drinks almost exclusively during the day, but it doesn't work at night as I don't drink so much. Then I eat a lot of cereal bars and some fatty/salty stuff for variety. I mix my own energy drinks with really bland flavour, the commercial ones are too sweet for me. But that wouldn't work for others, you've just got to try and see what works for you.
    But the key number is how much carbohydrate you can get in per hour.

    I think timetrialling needs to have a change of direction. Away from these courses and to less traffic dependant roads. Less about times, and more about beating competitors. In a way what the circuit champs are about.

  • Not until I've ridden it. It's ALL about my times.

  • That debate is one of the winter staples on the TTF. Some people think like that, others want PBs which means drag strips.

    Until such time as casualty rates become an issue, I reckon there is room for both.

    You're welcome to change your direction, but leave the rest of us alone.

    The absolute measure of whether people want to ride particular courses is that they enter events on those courses. It's an almost perfect devolution of power to the lowest possible level, a nearly perfect free market, a beautiful example of individual liberty.

    Personally that has increasingly become my feeling. I really didn't enjoy the R100/8 last year so as Tester says I'll be looking at more interesting (hopefully) local courses if I do much testing next year.

    A bit like doing well in a test because half the answers happen to be written on a wall by luck.

    I’m all for fast times. But on honest courses. Where variability is only due to natural conditions. Not man made.

    My 25mile pb is a joke really. It’s far from honest. I’d be the first to put an asterisk next to it.
