  • I might have a crack at a 240mi 12hr

  • You're faster than that. It does depend on how often you stop at the pub though. I found that having two pubs on course did hamper my progress somewhat.

  • Not on a road bike

  • Why would you use a road bike?

  • Because you have a TT bike?

  • I've done a 12hr on a TT bike. I could do another one and maybe do a few miles more or less than last time.

Or I could try a different challenge.

  • do a few miles more

    Isn't that the point?

If you've already done one on a TT bike I don't see using a road bike as much of a 'different challenge'. Your hands get a little more sore than your forearms...

  • I might have a crack at a 240mi 12hr

Also my target for this year - the club record's 238 miles...

  • If you're on a TT bike you should be aiming for 270 miles

  • My club’s record is 252 miles which I’m tempted by. Not sure how realistic it is, but we will see.

  • A nice round 21mph average. Have a go, it's an experience and you can be snooty to people who only ride 10s even if they're faster than you.

  • hippy

    • Faster than the guy who wrote the book "Faster"
  • What sort of time should I expect to be off the bike for (toilet, stretching etc)? I assume as a first timer it's likely I will want to stop at some point. I did a 100 this year and strangely enjoyed it, but a 12hr is quite a leap.

And I know all about the advantages of longer distances, I cleaned up at the club awards because the guy who is faster than me doesn't do further than 25 miles!

  • 30 seconds

  • I think I was stopped for about 6 minutes. When you see how much your average drops even with just a short stop you'll not want much time off.

  • If you're good and things go well you shouldn't be off the bike at all.

    In my first though...
I had to get off to stretch for a minute or two even though I was only riding at my 24hr power.
I stopped briefly to have a massive rant about getting lost (course change due to last minute road works).
I stopped a third time for painkillers, I think it was me hunkering down out of the Kent wind and I'd strained glutes.
Traffic light stop (Kent, Welsh, ECCA issue, none on A31)
I stopped again to call my team after I'd gone 10k off course due to no marshal being at a turn (see: last minute course changes). Had a piss while waiting for any kind of clue as to where the fuck I was supposed to be riding.
Stopped for another rant about wasting half an hour.

After that fucking disaster I still officially rode more than 240.

Pretty much every subsequent one I've had something go wrong so I'm still yet to execute a perfect race (forget perfect weather, fitness, etc, I just mean, with nothing going wrong).

  • As little as possible. I was off for 45 seconds last time I did the Newbury one: no support crew so I had to stop to change bottles. If I'd had a helper I wouldn't have stopped. Needed a long piss at the end though, and recall it was rather painful.

That still probably cost me almost a mile in distance, stop time plus it maybe takes a minute to slow down and another minute to get back up to speed.

  • Thanks for all the tips, don’t stop basically!
What event near London would people suggest is the best for a first 12? And how do you go about picking a target pace?

  • Newbury/FCCC 12, which happens to be the national this year.

  • Is it a bad idea to do a 12hr a week after a 100? I was planning on entering the ECCA 100 the weekend before.

  • Is it a bad idea to do a 12hr a week after a 100?

Not as bad as doing it the other way round :)

  • It depends on your recovery. It may well be fine. Only way to find out is to try it.
Agree with don't try it the other way round, I did that 2 years ago and ran out of power half way round the 100.

  • In my very unscientific tests, riding a 12hr before a 24hr is about 20mi better than doing it the other way around, even with ~3wks in between. It all depends on how deep you go, if you pick up an injury and your motivation for doing well in the second event. I did three 100s in three weeks and went faster at each one so providing you don't ruin your pacing you should be ok. The 12 should feel much easier at the start.
