That reminds me, I need to reformat/fresh install my mother in-laws MBA. It's almost heavy with malware and duplicate DMGs of random media players.

I had to reinstall High Sierra from backup due to some drive corruption. I went from 8gb spare space to 30gb spare. Now have a much speedier machine..thats the only time i have done anything like this since I bought the machine 3 years ago.

Of course it doesn't clean out unused apps, files, etc - but surely a fresh install sorts out everything on a system level?

Yes, a fresh install does.

A Time Machine backup just magically makes everything as it was at a previous stage.
Like, as if you used a time machine.

I did a High Sierra clean install on my iMac over the holidays, biggest pain are the non AppStore applications you need to find and reinstall.

When I have everything setup how I like I force a complete new time machine backup and use migration assistant to "clone" the same install over to my MacBookPro.

Keep all documents in sync to a NAS and both machines with Resilio Sync. (to which I make sure everything is synced before I start te process)

I highly doubt that it brings along a load of system level errors, crap, old settings, etc if you wipe your hdd, do a fresh install of osx, then restore from a time machine backup.

Is anyone interested in a 24" Imac? Late 2009, spec:
iMac 24 inch Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz 256 / 640 GB HD / superdrive

Comes with El Capitan, Adobe CC installed (cof cof).

It's my old studio iMac from my self-employed days. It's a lovely machine with a lovely big screen that I did a clean install on about a year ago. It's sat on the desk in my living room for the last 3 years unused and it seems a bit stupid to hang onto it for no reason.

Mac2sell values it at £460, would happily let it go for £400. Pickup in Herne Hill.

Well it has exactly the same files, that's kinda how OSX works...

All that stuff is dictated by files.

Files yes, but like @Cornish_Bikeish mentioned upthread, you get heaps of free space as you do it so something is certainly changing.

If you go back to a stage where there was, say, 10GB less data on your hard drive compared to right now then you will "get 10GB of free space", yes.

We’re talking about different things. What I mean is:

1 - back up to time machine hdd
2 - format computer, do a clean install of OS X
3 - restore from time machine hdd

This way you’ll get a clean install of OS X but with your settings, files and apps.

got some new wireless headphones (AKG N60NC) and when I am listening on my iphone it shows how much battery is left in the status bar which is handy.

how do I look at this on my mac? surely the headphones are sending some bluetooth signal to my iphone regarding battery level - surely my mac can receive the same? the bluetooth tab shows nothing

I think @kboy is mostly right. A clean install would remove all the os caches and virtual memory it used on your drive. That's where the free space comes from. Time machine doesn't back up that "other" portion.

What's gonna stop working if I install High Sierra? Logic X OK?

I'm scared it's gonna make my late 2011 MBP unusable but some people are reporting performance improvements even on older machines...

Logic X is fine, Logic 9, however, is no more :( I must have used it about three times.

Performance seems normal. Not noticed a difference either way. Early 2011 15"

Yeah, that motherfucker keeps popping up on my work iMac.

I think my extra space came from the fact that i partitioned my drive a couple of years ago to add bootcamp. I am rubbish at things like this so when i came to uninstall it i am not sure i did it all correctly. I was reading online that if you format and reinstall, all of the old crud that's not a system file is cleaned up.

Dunno, just thought it'd be good to clean up. Perhaps not needed.

Well not much to clean anymore. My 2011 MacBook Pro has shit a brick.
Loads to grey screen and no recovery options work.

Apparently is vintage so Apple won’t repair it. Will take it for a diagnostic and see what the hit is.

Looking to buy a new battery for my early 2011 Macbook Pro. I downloaded a battery monitor app to confirm the belief that the battery is past it, but according to this app the health of the battery is at 99% - 6746 mAh. In my experience the charge holds for less than an hour, so is my battery shot or not? Note, I've not owned this machine from new and it was refurbished (not by Apple).

Also, I've found various batteries at various prices from £100 down to £20. Is it worth spending big? I only want a few hours of charge.

After reading about pirate batteries exploding, catching fire or just expand, I’d be inclined to go Apple. But then it’d be £££

Reading emails in Mail and try to click links - just takes me to the homepage on Chrome - not the actual link.

Clicking links within browser is fine. Thoughts?
