  • Looking for a lower gear combination for my Tripster. Ideally a 46/30 and have been toying with the idea of using the inner and middle ring positions of a triple crankset. Anyone got any advice on options?

  • praxis alba are nice - interchangeable spider and direct mount too - relatively cheap and light

  • Don't have a clue if this'd work, but SRAM use a removeable spider so you could get a Force chainset then then put an MTB spider and rings on it.

  • Interested on the middle and granny ring option of a triple also.
Would love to hear any opinion whether this would be a great or bad idea.

  • The FSA is on my list, along with the Rotor, I'm just wondering how it will play with Shimano Di2.

  • that guy runs ultegra di2 (i think both 6750 and 6850) and says it works very well. i think he has the rotor spidering now but hasn't reviewed it yet.

  • Then it sounds like I'm all set

  • One thing to also remember is you will need a band on front mech to set your derailleur at the correct height.

I had seen most of the cranks above but hoping to do it on the cheap with an old triple.

  • controversial as he might be durianrider has loads of vids on youtube where he's showing his road bike with an xt crankset 22/34 or something like that, using a band on xt mech and re routing the cable for top pull.
I think the issue with such small rings is the mech needs to sit so low it ends up fouling the chainstay, hence the need for an mtb mech too. However if you're only going as low as a 30t you should be ok i'd imagine.
If you're interested I've got an old square taper campag triple with bb and mech from my old touring setup which I'd sell cheap

  • @at313 I've got a square taper triple but was looking for something hollowtech to save the hassle of switching bottom brackets. Need to see what the chainline looks like on that though. Thanks for the offer.

  • Thinking about a tiagara 4703 which will work perfect and also leave me with a spare 50t 4 arm ring that I can use on my road setup once the current one is work out. Probably eventually upgrade the 39 to a 42 or 44. Will also need to find suitable chainring bolts.

  • i've run a xt 48/28 w/ an xt fd bottom pull with ultegra 6800 shifters on a salsa vaya. trim doesn't work but it is otherwise fine.

  • Could you share the xt series you're using?

  • I finally did this last week and converted a 4703 triple to a double by removing the outside ride. Currently set up as a 39/30 and is pretty perfect for the fast and slow parts of Epping.

If I was doing more mixed on/off road I'd probably change the 39 to a 42 or 44 but I have very happy with current setup and no problems shifting on 11 speed setup.

Anyone able to point me in the direction of a comaptible 44/42t 4 bolt 110bcd chainring?

  • Looking for a 48 30 chainset.

If I take the big ring off a road triple and replace the middle with a 48 will it shift okay with a standard front mech and shifter?

  • is rotor's 46/30 spidering being discontinued? anyone know? i see it backordered lots of places and couldn't find it on their website

  • It will be because of Aldhu

  • The Sugino OX901D? 110/74 Double with 46/30 gearing, and works with most road double front mechs.

  • Looking for a 48 30 chainset.

May have trouble finding a front mech that will shift that gap smoothly...

  • ££££ That's why.

  • Ah.

Running a 110/74 triple with a middle/granny only is your best choice if you want to save money and keep a road front mech.
