It also depends on the rice you buy. It's pretty hard to mush up basmati so maybe try with another brand. My favourite is Laila.
I cook them covered and I use boiling water at 1.8:1 ratio instead of room temperature (I do wash but not drain hence the odd ratio). First on high heat then when it boils give the pot a couple of forward-backward shake and turn down the heat and cook till water dries/rice is translucent.
Never ever open the lid unless it's boiling over and oh ya clear lid is a must as it allows you to monitor when the rice is done!
I do it wrong but it works every time. I don’t presoak, just do a 2 to 1 water and rice mix , bring to a boil (covered) and then turn down to minimum until the water is gone. Let sit for a minute or two, flake with a fork and you’re done.
