  • Wow, just spotted this! Noted for future.

I won't be able to do 90 miles because of a recent knee op, but I'll nip in for the start and do the first 10 miles or so if it's ok?

  • I’m 50/50 on this as I just came back from the hospital and the pneumonia hasn’t cleared and it’s really hurting my lungs. Will keep you posted.

  • Yo YAL, hope you are well.. I’ve done zero training but put me down for the steady group.

  • Steve very sorry to hear this. HealTFU mate.

Jonny I'm sure you're very welcome.

    Al great news, I'm steadygroup4lfy

Ho hope you feel up to it come the day. Lovely to see you Christmas day

  • So if I opt for the fast group, when I get dropped cos I'll be spinning a 62", the steady group will be following the same route right?

  • Did I miss the route link? Could be a possible on my ss, need to get it out of the loft and the brakes sorted.

  • Subject to neither group going wrong, correct

  • Single Speed or Fixed is mandatory.

    (Sort of)

  • I wish there was any way in the world I could ride 90 miles fixed.

66 to Cambridge the other day ripped my knee apart. Which always happens at that sort of distance.

    Also, fitness.

  • Won't show if bike's not sorted :-)

  • Hiya!

With regards to groups and speed, it will only be split in two groups if there are enough numbers, will and backdrops to make it worthwhile. Steady group will be about 14-15mph, faster group I guess 16mph plus (if they work well together). See the route below. Consider that it will be cold, you will be fixed/SS and it's 90 miles going through the Chilterns (twice). It's not near central London bailout points and light is still scarce that time of year. These are things to consider for yourself and the group you are riding with. I'm more than happy to have anyone who fancies along for it. However, last year we rode as one group and a rider was asked to find his own way back as he wasnt able to maintain the group pace. In nicer conditions that's not how I prefer to run a ride, but in winter at 4 degrees in fading light with the threat of punctures, you need to be self-sufficient and sensible if things aren't going your way. 10-15 people's warmth and ride (and train tickets) depend on it.

  • Ok... this is, er, quite a challenge. The bit in the first screen-grab is part of my commute. On gears and Marathon 28's. In the winter. Massive respect to fg/ss-ers who do this but I am way too old and unfit.
Anyone passing the second screenshot is near me - if you're in trouble, let me know on 07896 476077 :-)
    edit.
if the pics would fucking upload

  • 300 meters more of elevation than last year, strangely arousing

  • Christmas Common mate, that hill is lit

  • It is a really stunning looking route. I hope to be able to do the whole lot next year. This year I'll probably stick with you a little bit past Windsor and then peel off back home.

  • Turns out being sent out of the country for 10 days with work.so not around... Sorry chaps, was well up.for this as a good bunch

  • Oh nvm Phil. Hope to roll with you soon

  • Christmas Common on the way out i assume. What's tgw bump on tge return stretch?

  • Just finalising cover so I can get the day off, but I'm in.

The hills don't faze me - it's not being able to keep up. Doing the sums in my head, I should be fine. I'll be fully equipped with marathon plus tyres and my rear rack just to make it a bit harder.

Will be the maiden outing for the new Jersey too!

  • @J_a_m_es you'll have no problem with pace.

The climb out of Marlow on Chalkpit Lane is one of my favourites.

Turville to Christmas Common is fucking grim with gears, never mind fixed.

  • No such thing as a grim hill on fixed. :)
Except maybe White Lane after about 200km. I've still not cracked that.
