Why didn't you go for a single chainring instead?
The Pinnacle Neon/Lithium chainset is £25, very cheap and enable the components to last longer, 36t with 11-32t chainring give you enough range.

Pretty much what I've done with my shitty Mtb Pina, best bike I've had... Now you need a cheap rear rack...
