Can also cause issues when you're trying to upgrade the OS, sometimes over the air won't work.
For ad blocking DNS66 works pretty well, although not quite as well as adaway.
If you are going to do it I'd go with the step by step route rather than an app. Easier to sort if it goes wrong and you know exactly what is happening. It's easy enough with a Nexus, the only awkward thing generally is getting the drivers installed.
I used to root all my phones, I don't tend to bother now.
Use magisk to root, if your phone's bootloader is unlocked. It'll "mask" that your phone is rooted so things like androidpay, Netflix etc will continue to work. Worth uninstalling them until you've tested it and confirmed it's working.
