  • How come new nuts/bolts are necessary?

The bolts thread into the big ring for the 50+, but the 46 uses nuts. Not sure why Shimano makes them that way, maybe it just wasn't worth the complexity for the 46 since the roller pitch circle is so close to the bolt circle that a flat ring is plenty stiff enough without the fancy shaping.

  • Huh, interesting! The bolts in question seem annoyingly expensive (£39.99 at SJS + the cost of the chainring of course) which makes me think it's the better option to just buy a whole CX chainset, if I can find a 10 speed one (I had the RS500 in mind, but that is 11 speed, though whether that matters I don't know).

I expect that generic chainring bolts will be fine, if you don't mind not having the shape blend into the spider arms.

It's often the best way if you want OE rings, the chainset is sold at a huge discount but the replacement rings not so much, and the RRP for a chainset is already about half the RRP of its constituent parts bought as spares. Complete 6800 46/36 is £122-£138 depending on crank length, that's like buying the chainrings and bolts and getting the cranks thrown in for free. Leonard Zinn says it's OK, even if Shimano don't :)
