Will be interesting to see how 46-34, rather than the more normal (I think), 46-36 works.

How come new nuts/bolts are necessary?
The bolts thread into the big ring for the 50+, but the 46 uses nuts. Not sure why Shimano makes them that way, maybe it just wasn't worth the complexity for the 46 since the roller pitch circle is so close to the bolt circle that a flat ring is plenty stiff enough without the fancy shaping.

The close ratio is aimed at CX, 46/34 will be fine on a road bike. I haz 48/34 Campag on mine. Having a smaller big ring than usual means the inner ring is more of a bail-out, so you'll probably find yourself doing fewer from shifts than before.
6800 or any compatible 110mm 4-bolt asymmetric chain ring will fit, but you will need new nuts and bolts
