Actually I thought the script and actor direction was spot on in capturing the honkiness of the original trilogy, excepting a few scenes where it was clear the comedy and dialogue was aimed at a contemporary audience. Each and every Star Wars film has done this without exception, and personally I think it fits this tone and remit to shape the idea of what exactly a Star Wars film is, especially given the interest Disney are showing in expanding the franchise.
From the sort of critique I've heard, if Empire was released nowadays then half of Star Wars fandom would prolapse themselves. Plot holes, continuity issues, kitsch dialogue ...
The whole thing is a fucking sci-fi pastiche of early cinematic portrayal of Knights, damsels and castles for fucks sake. Understanding that let's you make much more sense of the Last Jedi ... (which takes a lot of cues from WW2 era films)
how do you open a star wars movie?
it was a bit of welcome levity in a movie series that historically takes itself far too seriously. i liked the fact that none of the stuff you were lead to believe that was going to happen didn't. now that's value or money. fanbois are getting salty because they've have had their expectations chucked out the window and they didn't get the fanfic screenplay they thought they paid for. hey ho.
fwiw this is the first SW movie i've enjoyed top to bottom, can't wait for the next one.
