  • Nope def with you on this. Compared two bottles of bunnahabhain 12 recently. One black label, 1 red, both opened by myself recently. One notably more astringent with a bitter woody finish, the other felt it had a higher sherry influence. Both same abv, non chill filtered, non coloured etc. I like both, but no doubt they taste different.

  • My wife has become a bourbon fan, recently we have purchased, and drank, a bottle of Woodford Reserve (as Old Fashioned mainly)
Are there any others worth trying at the £25-30 mark?
Bulleit seems to be the common choice in bars and restaurants, but they also seem to think that Tanqueray is the pinnacle of Gin and Havana Club Especial is something to revere, neither of which are that good, which puts me off Bulleit.

  • Bulleit is good, Four Roses Small Batch is good, Eagle Rare is also v good and hangs a little above the £30 mark, Rittenhouse do a strong, cheap bourbon which is fucking great for old fashioneds but a bit tough straight up

  • Woodfood is better than anything else around that price IMO (Makers, Knob Creek, etc). Bulleit Rye is nice if you want something spicier.

Husdon stuff is super nice, around £30 but smaller bottles. Eagle Rare v tasty.

100? Yeah, not a straight drinker

  • There are currently a few tasty bourbons dancing around that price bracket across the supermarket offers.

    Markers Mark is tasty.
Buffalo Trace makes a lovely old fashioned.
I don't rate Bulleit or 4 roses but other's here do.

In terms of Rye, Rittenhouse Rye is excellent if you can find it.

  • That's not good to hear. I have a bottle of that waiting as a Xmas present and the one I had last Xmas (from your recommendation) was a real pleasure to drink. Guess I'll find out in a few days!

  • Anyone tried Aberlour 10?

  • ^ Yes. It was ok but I had enough by 2/3's of the way though the bottle.

Actually I think it's the 80 proof that's a wee bit rough - 100 proof is the one

  • Yep:
    Rittenhouse Straight Rye, awesome mixer
Rittenhouse Straight Rye 100 proof, all around awesome

  • Leaving present from work. Can't complain

  • There has always been cycles where consistency suffers as a result of increased demand, the last 10 years have seen a huge increase in demand from China which has put pressure on the distilleries to increase production. Some distilleries are better at dealing with this than others, Glenlivet and Glenmorangie are notoriously bad at having any sort of consistency for their 12 year olds no matter what the demand is but Arberlour are an excellent example of a big distillery that always delivers what you expect.

  • A little Christmas haul.

The ka va lan is unusual. Tastes of sherry. I need to drink all of it to decide if I like it. The Nikka from the barrel opens up with a drop of water. Divine.

The unpronouncable I have yet to try.

  • Hudson rye is lovely.

  • So, the springbank 10 has improved hugely just by being open for a couple of weeks i guess. Surprising difference - the unpleasantness has gone, and its more like, dunno, a talisker or something

  • I'm drinking trace.

I've drunk wicked chicken. Anything is better than that.

  • 'Och-en-tosh-an

Was until recently the only triple distilled single malt in Scotland. Matured in open air warehouses just north of Glasgow. The tour is highly recommended especially for the tasting experience.

I have a bottle of their 21 at home which I have carefully rationed for a few years. Not had the heartwood but their Three Wood is very tasty.

  • today is about this which is actually really nice and only £25 at tesco now - usually closer to £40

  • ^ have you tried it from the freezer? Very nice

  • Bulleit rye on the go here - it's cheap at Tesco. Got some award winning Aldi single malt from the in laws too.

  • really? what's the science behind that (except magnets)

  • I don't know. It makes it thicker and sweeter tasting. It's nice

  • Colder as well. It will change the the partial pressure of the esters and other volitile sue to being colder. Smell is a very important part of taste changing the balance of the smell through temp could alter the taste quite a bit.

  • Just has a drop of the auchentoshan and it is spirity like suntory chita. I think it tastes similar. With a drop of water the flavour changes to mellow but a taste I can't quite describe. Nutty perhaps but not. Lovely though.
