You like espresso but can't afford/don't have an espresso machine. Pretty simple.
It won't be as good though, you're right

The recipe Steve Peel posted on the last page, tastes good.

Just tried that Hoffmann method for the first time this morning.
Wow. Very, very good.
Thank you @StevePeel

I think someone posted this on here a couple of years ago. Haven’t used it for ages but when it was posted last time I used it a lot and really enjoyed it. Thanks for reminding me!

Need rid of this grinder - https://www.lfgss.com/comments/13994414/ - £25?
Also, cafetiere recommendations please

I have a couple of cheap sainsburys ones. Given my propensity to drop things and the Hoffmann method posted yesterday I see no need to spend £££ on one.

That's what I like to hear, thanks.
mrs_com has a propensity to just jam the plunger in and fuck up the edges of the screen/mesh/filter so cheap helps.

We got the Orchestrale Nota on @StevePeel ‘s advice. It has been great, the huge boiler means the temperature remains quite stable (so much better than my previous Silvia).
Next year when we renovate our kitchen we plan to plumb it in.

Haven't tried the Hoffman method yet and am a newb with the press, but I immediately found that a coarse grind made a cup that tasted far too weak, so his advice concerning that makes sense to me.

He suggests a less finer grind than usually recommended, which would increase your surface area/extraction and increase in perceived strength. Your dose might be a factor too? 60-70g/L is a good start point.

Has anyone here with a Gaggia/Rocket/Rancilio ever experience some "spitting" when using a naked PF?
It seems my Classic does this a fair bit. There are some of the holes from the PF from which the coffee comes out with what seems to be more strength and in diagonal line therefore spitting coffee on my water tank, grinder and kitchen top.

It usually means there's some channeling happening. The water finds an easier way through the puck and rushes through, resulting in an incomplete extraction and some mess on the other side (and using a bottomless PF helps you spotting this happening).
When removing the PF you should be able to see "holes" or pits where the water went through and the channeling occurred.

Yes that makes complete sense. I've just read on Reddit that doing the OPV Mod might help reduce this.
I assume getting more consistent/level when tamping will also help so something to work on. Anything else?
Did this kind of attitude put a man on the moon? Progress is the core of human endeavor. IMAGINE - you're grandchildren could grow up in a world where you can make passable espresso on the side of a mountain with kit that only weighs a handful of grams. What a world that would be. Be part of the solution! We can do this.
