Very basic question but what is this port next to the HDMI port on my laptop?

As above, mini display port. HDMI is only really used for TVs. Display port is the equivalent for video between computers and monitors etc. And that’s the mini version. Plenty of adapters around

Make sure you get an active adapter if you need one, the apple ones don't work for other stuff.
