  • I want someone to invent an espresso machine that uses a bike pump to reach the required pressure. Probably hard to reach 130 psi without a track pump but you can get 120 psi with most mini-pumps and it'd be great for bikepacking. Alternatively, one that works with a shock pump. And if you're low-tech or poor like me you can use it in your house too!

  • In that case maintaining the correct temperature is going to be your issue.

    The solution is filter coffee.

    The precipitate is coffee grounds...

  • Not if you store the compressed air somewhere, then add your hot water and then release the air at once.

Why not use your inner tube/wheel as the compressed air storage tank? Can't imagine that'll affect the taste at all.

  • Anyone tried this one yet? Creates 9 bar of pressure apparently https://instagram.com/p/BX5yG5BlJcP/

  • Handpresso apparently reaches 16 Bar but I think that falls off as you pour the drink and keeping it hot enough would also be an issue.

In other news, new method of caffeine delivery is in the house.

  • I had a Rok / presso machine for a while a few years ago. They’re the ones with a similar chamber as this^^ but two long metal arms on each side. To get a good coffee I had to prepare everything just right and use all my strengthz to pull the shot though.

in the end it was such a hassle. Not only did it keep breaking but everything had to be perfect (grind, tamp, freshness of coffee...) I just gave up and went back to moka pots and paper filters.

Tl:dr I’d be very impressed if you could get a good espresso with that tiny thing there!^^

  • Nice looking... wanna say cafetiere..?

    What grinder is that?

  • The press is an Espro 8 oz, the grinder is a Helor 101.
Just got the grinder in the mail, had the Espro for a week now; the grinder is very smooth and makes a nice even grind as far as I can see.

  • Damn. Never seen the Espro before. Very interesting and a reassuringly expensive.

    How's the coffee turning out?

  • after a year or so of being lazy and drinking instant ( i know) i got my shit together and ordered a wilfa grinder (anyone interested in a hario hand grinder?)

got excited this morning and pulled out my scales and aeropress, only to find that the rubber on the aeropress has shrunk and no longer seals. Is this normal? Sort of annoying that you'd need to buy a new one every few years.

  • I find that it depends on storage, if the rubber is compressed in the tube for a while it can mess up the seal.

Have you tried heating it up in hot water? If it’s not totally wrecked you might be able to coax it back.

  • It wasn't even a little off - it didn't create a seal whatsoever. Tbf it must be about 4 years old now, several hundred uses.

  • Oh nice! That grinder looks great. My new Feldgrind should arrive soon apparently.

  • There's no need to buy a whole new aeropress, the plunger can be found as a spare part.

  • @Aroogah - with the new grinder it's actually relatively close to the moka, I'm surprised but thankful for the difference between this and the zass.
@Fyoosh - good stuff, I was torn between a few of them.

  • Moka pot, do you "tamp" the coffee or just leave it loose?
I used to compress it with a tea spoon a fair amount but I've been told it's a bad idea due to the fairly low pressure

  • I never tamp; on my steel I make a little cone and have the top do the job,
on my brikka I have found that I only need to fill the filter to the halfway point.

  • No tamping for a mocha pot either. I usually just smooth the grounds out before putting top on.

  • Have had a brief go on this, and it was pretty surprising! Still not quite as much body as a machine espresso, but I quite like my shots long and silky as opposed to short and sticky anyway, so it was pretty tasty.

I’ve been using Hoffman’s cafetière method just lately and it’s delicious. It’s basically preparing a whole drink in the cupping method. Very clean, very sweet, little sediment. You just need some time.

  • I don't really understand the whole obsession with trying to create espresso without an espresso machine. Just make a filter coffee and accept an aeropress for what it is.

  • NEW GADGETS THO!

I just tried the fancy french press coffee, it's nice.

  • General consensus is not to tamp. Theres a good video on you tube by James Hoffman that I'm working off at the moment

  • Which fancy french press?
