scanner error?

I have a dedicated 35mm scanner that you feed strips of six negs, sandwiched in a plastic, uh, thing.
It doesn't move to the next frame automatically but you have to "advance" it per hand; sometimes it doesn't really center well (there's some "wiggle room"), so I keep my hand on the plastic thing sticking out either end of the scanner and nudge it left/right a bit during the preview scan to align the negative better with the scanning unit (much easier than pulling the whole thing out, taking the "sandwich" apart and nudge the negative strip itself).
I do admit it took me years to realize this.

When you push it all the way to the next negative in row during the preview scan it looks like the image above.
This is just a screenshot of course - there's no way you could actually scan it like this in high resolution.
